Bone broth. Homemade, of course. Because we all know that industrial (which is nearly anything you buy) is garbage, despite what the label and the advertising says. Only homemade ensures quality and nutrition, like all the micronutrients you find in homemade stuff, just to mention one single category. And yes, ladies, the collagen that you pay big bucks for in your skincare products, are naturally occuring here, too. So stop buying flavoured water and make the real thing yourself.
I collect any kind of bones I can get my hands on. Say, from when I
roast my own chicken. Bones go in the freezer and when I have enough, it's heavenly broth time. Crack the bones (to get the marrow out easier), add your salt, pepper, onion, garlic, bay leaves (don't skimp on the bay leaves), water and whatever else I/you want in there (bit of veggies? A chunk of ginger root? A fish carcass?), and let is simmer for hours on end. Don't be afraid to hit the six or eight hour mark, but only enough heat that it ju-u-ust simmers. I hit that six or eight hour mark...in my pressure cooker; an absolutely heavenly tool, if you do a lot of soups and stews, which I highly recommend.
True, some people think I'm a cheap-skate when I mention bone broth, but that just proves who the dumb ones are, having no clue about the health benefits. But if you speak mulah to them - explain how much money they can save on soups and stews - their eyes light up like a Christmas tree in a dark night. Especially when taking your grocery bills into consideration, this day and age (2026). And when they learn about the nutritional values, they are instant converts. Some a little hessitant because "I've never done it before". Others ready to "jump right out", without a parachute. But I've never gotten any negative feedback, once they've tried it. To those who give me the "I've never done it before" routine, I tell them there are probaly 700 or 800 things they are doing now, that they "never did before" in their life, at some point...but now you do, so what's one more thing?" There's a first time for about a million things in life. Add one more thing to try. And if that one doesn't work, I tell them "it's like making love, except it smells better". Then they're hooked. It also tastes better. Saves you money. Makes you healthier, so give me just one single reason not to try it?
So, dunk it all in there, the stuff I mentioned above, and let it simmer
"for hours", after which you run the entire thing through a strainer, keep the broth and discard everything that landed up in your strainer. The stuff you have in your broth now, is all the stuff you pay hundreds of dollars for every year, when you go buy "nutritional supplements" like vitamins and minerals, etc. Why not just eat the natural thing and save a whole bunch of money? Anyway! Your choice.
Now you got your genuine bone broth that packs a punch, and it's flavourfull enough that you can have it as is, and truely love it. Or you can add a bit of beef or chicken flavour (pick a good quality) or whatever else you like. Maybe some of the saved meat from your roasted chicken. It's all up to you, so go experiment. The bone broth is your out-of-this-world foundation for your soups and noodles.
And here is what I like best, being the sourdough fanatic I am: This broth is no different than your sourdough starter that you keep building on and refreshing. I grew up on soup and sourdough. If I was a believer (which I am not), I'd be up there, knocking on the pearly gates right now, bone broth in hand.
